The physicians at the Ottawa Fertility Centre have extensive training and experience in reproductive surgery. We offer minimally invasive surgical procedures including hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and mini-incision techniques to reduce discomfort and recovery time. Our surgeons provide expertise in the treatment of fertility related conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, uterine septum, Asherman's syndrome and tubal disease. Surgery is performed at the Ottawa Hospital.

Hysteroscopy

This technique involves placement of a thin telescope into the uterus through the cervix without making any incisions in the body. The uterus is filled with fluid allowing a clear view inside the uterus and permitting surgical treatment of conditions such as fibroids, polyps, uterine septum and adhesions. Hysteroscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. Patients go home the same day with minimal discomfort and recovery time.

Laparoscopy

This technique involves placement of a small telescope and surgical instruments into the abdomen through small (5-10mm) skin incisions. It allows the surgeon to see the reproductive organs, check if the tubes are open, and treat conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts and adhesions. Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia and patients go home the same day. Recovery is much faster than traditional surgery using large skin incisions. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days.

Tubal ligation reversal

For patients who have had their tubes 'tied' (tubal ligation surgery) it may be possible to restore fertility by reconnecting the fallopian tubes. One of the main predictors of pregnancy following this surgery is the original method of tubal ligation. The reversal procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, through a small bikini-line incision. After an overnight stay in hospital, patients go home the next day. Recovery time can vary.

Please note that for women who have had a tubal ligation, the initial consultation and tubal ligation reversal surgery are not covered by OHIP.
