Dr. John Collins received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Queen's University, Kingston. He earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and completed his residency in Urology at the University of Toronto. He then took a fellowship in tumour immunology at University College, London, under the tutelage of Dr. Av Mitcheson. He joined the University of Ottawa's Division of Urology in 1975, developing an interest in the emerging field of male infertility.
Dr. Collins is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the University of Ottawa, an attending physician at the Ottawa Hospital and a consultant andrologist to the Ottawa Fertility Centre. He is certified in Urology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a founding member of the Canadian Andrology Society, and served as its President for 2 years, overseeing its merger with the Canadian Fertility Society. He has been Director of the Residency Training Program in Urology and past Chairman of the Division of Urology at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital. He has served as Executive Secretary of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Urology Examination Board. He has also been Secretary of the Canadian Urological Association, and subsequently its President in 1995.
Dr. Collins is the author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters on male infertility and sexuality. He has been an Invited Lecturer and Visiting Professor to a variety of Societies and Universities. He has served on Advisory Boards of several pharmaceutical companies with interests in male infertility and sexuality. His clinical and research focus continues in the areas of male factor infertility and androgen deficiency in men.
