Job Summary
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the registered nurse participates as an important member on a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, a lab scientist, embryologists and andrologists, sonographers, a pharmacist, phlebotomists, and administrative support staff. Using the nursing process, professional knowledge, critical thinking skills, technical skill and clinical judgment, the nurse collaborates with other professionals to deliver comprehensive, high quality patient focused nursing care to women and their partners undergoing treatment for general fertility including ovulation induction, donor sperm insemination (DI), intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). The nursing role involves working in the recovery room to prepare patients for procedures and care for patients post procedure; assisting physicians during procedures; performing conscious sedation for procedures; preparing the room between procedures; meeting with patients to educate them on the treatment plan and to prepare treatment schedules.
The nurse contributes to the Centre’s vision to be the centre of choice for reproductive care in Canada by participating in ongoing quality initiatives to improve nursing services, procedures and standards and participates in educational activities of the Centre.
The Clinic Registered Nurse is personally responsible and accountable to ensure that her nursing practice and conduct meets the Standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the policies and procedures of the Ottawa Fertility Centre.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs patient assessments.
- Delivers comprehensive, high quality patient focused nursing care to women and their partners undergoing treatment fertility.
- Implements and evaluates patient treatment plans.
- Plays a leadership role and contributes to a successful team environment.
- Ensures patient safety.
- Contributes to the ongoing improvement of nursing services, procedures, and standards in the Centre.
- Safeguards all confidential information obtained and/or used during the course of work and takes reasonable precautions to protect the privacy of clients, co-workers and management

Qualifications and Experience
- Current Certificate of Registration, College of Nurses of Ontario
- Meets Standards of Nursing Practice for R.N.
- Current BCLS & ACLS certification
- Counseling experience an asset
- Previous experience in Gynecology preferred
- Previous experience in infertility preferred
- Specific knowledge of nursing related to the care of the infertile.
Knowledge
- Nursing practices according to standards of College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their roles in patient care.
- Knowledge of policies, procedures and standards of care for Assisted Human Reproduction
- Knowledge of computer software applications such as MS Word, Excel.

Job Title : Sonographer, Casual permanent
Reports to : Clinical Manager
Job Summary
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Sonographer contributes to the Centre’s vision of becoming nationally recognized as Canada’s premier centre for reproductive medical care. The performance of ultrasound examinations during fertility treatments and investigations is crucial to the operations of the Ottawa Fertility Centre. Accurate and consistent measurements are critical to the success of ART cycles. With this in mind the sonographer has a very important and specialized roll in the Ottawa Fertility Centre. The sonographer’s responsibilities include: performance of ultrasound examinations as per the AIUM standards for gynecology and early obstetrical ultrasound, accurate and consistent measurement of fertility related sonographic features (follicle diameters, endometrial thickness, antral follicle counts, etc), and trans-abdominal guidance for embryo transfers. The sonographer also will input reports into a PACS system for physician reporting. Housekeeping duties will include appropriate cleaning of endocavitary probes that is consistent with the High Level Disinfection standards from the CPSO, and proper set up and cleaning of the ultrasound rooms between examinations.
Performs ultrasound examinations on infertility patients using standard AIUM guidelines, such as :
- Gynecological scans
- Trans-abdominal, trans-vaginal follicle tracking scans
- Saline infusion sonography +/- tubal patency studies with agitated saline
- Early obstetrical scans
- Male scrotal scans
Input examination results into PACS for physician reporting with:
- proper image capture
- proper reporting of scan details
Assist in embryo transfer procedures through trans-abdominal ultrasound guidance by:
- providing ultrasonographic guidance to physician performing embryo transfer
Properly clean and disinfect endocavitary probes by:
- complying with CPSO policy for HLD of endocavitary probes
- checking and refilling soaking solutions as required for disinfecting solution guidelines
Maintain room safety and cleanliness before and after ultrasound examinations by:
- stocking room with ultrasound gel and supplies as needed
- placing linens and dirty supplies in designated areas between examinations
- reporting any safety concerns for staff or patients to the quality assurance officer
- reporting any malfunctioning equipment or quality concerns to the Clinic Manager
- ensuring the necessary equipment and trays are available for the day’s activities (SIS trays etc)
Performs other related duties, as required, including:
- Training of other staff members;
- Participating in meetings and in-service sessions;
- Ensuring that the ultrasound environment is optimized for patient care (light, ventilation, pressure, temperature, etc.);
- Assisting in development and implementation of new technical protocols;
- Performing data searches and tabulations;
- Performing special projects; and
- Maintaining currency in new technology.
Contributes to the ongoing improvement of ultrasound services, procedures, and standards in the Centre
Safeguards all confidential information obtained and/or used during the course of work and takes reasonable precautions to protect the privacy of clients, co-workers and management
Qualifications
- Current and up to date ARDMS registration required or equivalent.
- Certification - as RDMS (OB GYN) desirable
Experience
Experience and comfort with transvaginal ultrasonography
